What we have here is an extremely rare, one of a kind, handmade acoustic from Master luthier Bill Gruggett. Hand signed by Bill and dated 06/19/2008, I am told it was the last acoustic that he built. The Gentleman that I acquired it from purchased it directly from Bill himself.
Gruggett was the lead Luthier of Mosrite guitars back in the 60's/70's who later went on to form his own line of professional grade instruments. His are among some of the most highly sought after, and rare guitars on the market. Particularly since his passing in 2012.
While known mostly for his electrics, Bill also produced a very limited number of acoustics over his career. However, I have never come across another one.
This is a stellar guitar! Parlor sized with a lower bout width of 13 3/4", nut width of 1 11/16", string spacing of 2 1/8". Highly figured Australian Lacewood back and sides, elaborate wood marquetry center back strip top, mahogany set neck with white heel cap, rosewood finger board, ebony belly bridge, MOP round fret markers, Martin chrome enclosed tuners and buttons, "Gruggett" inlay on the Mosrite fashioned headstock. Double bound white/black body binding with herringbone binding inlaid on top of body, with multi-ply soundhole rosette with “herringbone” wood marquetry center ring
With the exception of a few minor pic swirls on the pick guard, and two small blemishes in the finish on the back, this guitar is in mint condition.
The woods have opened up very nicely to reveal a warm buttery tone, well balanced lows, good punch, creamy mids, and clean crisp highs. Beautiful easy playing guitar with a lovely voice.
This may be your once in a lifetime opportunity to own such a rare piece. There are no others on the market, and no more will ever be made.
This guitar was featured in the recent publication "Bakersfield Guitars" by Willie G. Mosley.
