Hello fellow Bakersfield-eins,
*a little about me> I was born and raised right here and I plan on keepin it that way. I graduated West High School in 2000, attended BC and CSUB, owned and operated a small cafe downtown for a bit and started a family. I tell you this because I am no stranger to the changes over the last 20 years, and with the ‘point in time’ numbers that came out this year, the face of homelessness has changed, it’s no longer an adult- it is our children!
I knew something had to be done.
So, I started a non-profit to reach current enrolled Kern High School students that have found them selves in a ‘situation’ . Their is a record of 500 high school students that are registered homeless and countless more that are not registered or fall through the cracks. Maybe their house hold is living hand to mouth, or ‘couch surfing’ to avoid a home problem, maybe their is neglect or pregnancy. The point is that these kids are wearing the same 1-2 outfits day after day. This starts the cycle of impressions, judgement, opportunities and bullying.
We collect and wash teenage clothes for school, sports, job interviews, formal/prom, maturnaty, etc.
Also- each school has spirit gear, we want these kids to feel proud of their school because that keeps them in the desk, in school, getting their education to better their ‘situation’
So please donate teenage clothing, shoes, backpack and other school supplies, hygiene (especially feminine products), or money/gift card - I do have a TIN and can provide a receipt.
I can pick up or you can drop off.
