Verification code SCAM (BAKERSFIELD)

This is how the scam known as the "verification code scam." works:
The scam starts with a fake ad giving something valuable for free to attract victims.
The scammer asks for a phone number to send a text with a code "for verification purposes" or to ensure the recipient is "serious."

Once they have the phone number, the scammer sets up an account with a company using your phone number, that company needs to send a verification number to your phone and that is the text that you will get.

The scammer gets the verification code from you and they enter the verification code and now they have a brand new account using your phone number and they use this account to defraud people and to set up a bigger chain of scams, making it appear as though all the scams aae coming from your phone number.

Protect Yourself:
Never share verification codes you receive.
Be skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true and don't get greedy, if it sounds too good to be true, THEN IT IS A SCAM
Conduct transactions in person, if possible, and in public places.
Verify the identity of the person you're dealing with and look for inconsistencies in their story or requests.
